It never ceases to amaze me, the vastness of its network, the 24*7 schedule, across the whole breadth of a country, different cultures, different languages.Someone should run a statistics on the number of signboards that they have to paint , it would read something line "over a million signboards, 20 different languages, spread over some thousand square kms". At stations, the first thing that hits you is the chaos, its a miracle that everything somehow comes together in the end. WHats even more surprising, its all managed by govt employees and they are even making profit in the process . This inspite of subsidizing passenger traffic.
And then there is this reservation system, which runs on some old antique pcs and still does its job flawlessly, again developed by CMC then a govt organization, before it was acquired by TCS.Now-a-days they even come with feedback sheets for the housekeeping staff in trains!. Ohh trains these days are usually on time atleast better than some private airlines. The compartments these days also have power outlets so your ipod /laptop is alive. There are plans to provide live tv through DTH systems and wifi.
