My ramblings

Yday was watching Natgeo "Was Darwin wrong " and then "The story of the Earth". The first series explored Darwins Origin of Species , the arguments against it and the the evidence for it. The second series was a geology + astronomy + biology mix on how our planet was formed and the earth became inhabitable.

Its not like all this was new for me but somehow some new thoughts cropped up. There have been many occasions when I have wrestled with God consciousness, but no matter how bad the situation was, I could never shake off the belief. In fact at times like that they were somehow reinforced. Yesterday I was struck by the parallels between Darwin's evolution theory and the various avatrars of Krishna. According to Hindu mythology the Avatars were in the following sequence
1. Matsya (Fish)
2. Kurma (Tortoise)
3. Varaha (Boar)
4. Narasimha
5. Vamana
6. Parashurama
7. Rama
8. Krishna
9. Buddha
10.Kalki

According to theory of evolution, life started in water , (fish) , moved to a semi water-land species (tortoise), from where land animals began to appear (boar, narasimha), then to other humanoid species (Vamana) and then Man. I am not implying Darwin shouldnt get the credit that our religious texts should get the credit or something on those lines. Or we give up scientific quest.

I am really wondering if religion can actually compliment our scientific temper, Knowledge is the ultimate goal , what religion does is to wrap it up in many stories, beliefs so that it can actually sell it to us. But we instead miss the essence of it all and chase the symbolic stuff. And then we have a conflict which we are too dumb to resolve and carry on. Religion can moderate our society, can constructively channel our thoughts provided we understand the essence of it.

So what about God ? well thats beyond my comphrension now, My ideas are still crystallizing, I think they will probably lie somewhere between the rational science and the faith of spirituality.
