Iceland has named a lesbian prime minister. Its a really commendable feat and a sign of the state of icelandic society. Often individual freedom is sacrificied in the face of greater good for teh society. I have always resented it, but then there is alos some merit in the argument , if more number of people benifit from a rule, the rule is justified, inspite of the inadequacy of the majority. Seldom has it happened that the majority has been considerate in their dealing with the minority. Sexual orientation is an individual choice, if someone has made that choice, let it be and to go beyond that and choose her as the primeminister is a sign of maturity that Icelandars have demonstrated.
This doesnt mean that, we will stage a demonstration in India tomm or a talk show on NDTV over teh weekend, why it cant happen in India, worst of all a sms pool with a cant say option!, We as a society are not ready for it, we are not mature enough and we should be ashamed of that.
Then there was this news of a journalist refusing Padmashree, and his explanation was "Journalism should not be judged by government and journalists should not accept awards from governments they are covering or writing about,” comparing it to “The external auditor of a company taking an award from the company he is auditing or scrutinizing.”. The guy in question is Mr Sainath. Frankly I didnt know of this dude but what a statement. To stand up for something you believe is so refreshing and of late I must admit I have seen some refreshing change in our public personalities. Perhaps its a sign of the growing internal strength of our society.Padmashree is probably one of the highest civilian awards that a journalist can hope for, apart from the bharat Ratna, and to refuse it on the grounds that it might corrupt his belief is WOW. But by doing so he is certainly the one to be remembered, I dont remember any of the other Padmashree awardees nothing against them, congratulations to them, how often we see something like this.
Finally there was this diary milk ad ....
Hmm A not so bad day today
