Au hasard Balthazar

Thats what happens when you place honour above everything
He has spent his life creating obligations for himself
WHat for ?
Not one in 10 believes he is innocent
DO I have any obligations ?
I am free obliged only to do what suits my interests.

Life is nothing but a fairground, a marketplace where even
your word in unncecessary. A bank note will do,
paying people frees you from your obligation.
Better still get them to work for nothing

Not everyone sees things my way.

You quickly learn you can do as you like and still command respect.
It just takes nerve and flair.

-----------------

It has all been spoiled and wasted,
just as it was about to pay off.
So much has been swept away in so little time.

We must make ammends.

How?

Father wants to return what your father lost in the suit.

He wont accept it.
He has retreated into his pride.
He takes pride in his suffering.
Oh, Jacques, how I have dreamed about you,
A boy like you.
Honest, a bit silly, who'd say "Be mine. It isnt your fault."

What isnt your fault?

But what an awekening, enough to drive you mad.
You know everything now. You still want to marry me?

Yes

You will be ashmed of me later.

No.

You will never blame me for any of this ?

Never.

A commitment for life ?

Yes.

But, Jacques, marriage ...its out-of-date.

We'll still marry. We'll be poor, but I'll work twice as hard.

You bore me.

Dont be angry.

You see our names carved on this bench,
our games with Balthazar. But I dont see a thing.
I have no more tenderness, no heart, no feelings.
Your words dont affect me any more.
Our vows of love, our childhood promises,
were in a world of make-believe, not reality.
Reality is different.

-------------------

Why the fuck reality has to be different, if people remain true to themselves, true to their dreams, its not that a difficult world. More often than not we live someone's dreams, somebody's perception, somebody's life.

First movie of Robert Bresson am thoroughly impressed, has to be these guys are special.
