World this week, was a great show, back in those days, it was one of the only news series that stood out and now also NDTV as a news channel stands out from the pack. There is no background music to their news items , with other channels its kind of difficult to make out, if you are watching a soap opera or a news. They still have some serious debates, on some difficult topics.
Not being critical but just a thought, why did they start with the world, shouldnt they have tried to compile a series on India. WE have enough stories in our diversity, history, culture to keep a show running. There would ahve been numerous inspirational stories among us, many unsung heroes. Somehow we have always looked outside with awe, a news event on US or Europe always seem much more news worthy than something here.
To this day we dont ahve any channels concentrating on our history, our culture, we just dont value it. Thanks to History, Discovery I know more about Europe, World wars, US economy than India. The little that I know about India through TV also came through their channels. We dont have any channel which showcases us. WE dont analyse much, over simplify things, investigative journalism exists, but in the shape of the now popular sting shows. Our space program, our nuclear program and our wars just dont resonate :(. WHenever I travel, its enchanting to see our diversity, fascinating stories with fellow travellers, but no, we just dont have that perspective. There could be numerous Lonely Planet episodes on this country, on our food, rituals, but.
We just dont look at us with enough pride. Strangely on the other end we also got a different genre of channels /programs which try to portray an embarrassing picture of our idealistic values , culture filled with high sounding dialogues of 'Kartavya', 'Maryada' 'Sanskriti' and all that crap. There is not a single program that portrays us in an objective / fact based way.
Perhaps we are like that, or the overwhelming market for TV shows is like that.
