Gulal

Dev D hangover still being there, Gulal was not to be missed. It left me a bit disappointed though or may be as I have now begun to accept, I didnt get it.

I thought that there were way too many characters, who popped up , lurked in the background and then vanished, the script never really got inside the skin of any character. The erstwhile King, the Kings son, the teacher who was in love with Dilip, who got ragged, the illegitimate kids of the king, KK Menons wife, his mistress, his main accomplice, all these characters had potential but never developed.perhaps KK Menon's and Dilip's were the only characters that got some thought, but with the supporting characters too thin, the main characters seemed to lack the depth, the convincibility. What left a bad taste was, all these characters had potential to bloom.

What I liked though was it felt like a real Indian story, I feel we have so many stories in this diverse culture waiting to be discovered, and this movie was somewhat
in that direction. Student election, romance, university life can be such an intriguing plot, but I dont seem to recollect any movie that did justice to this. We need more such directors who are willing to go beyond the obvious, treat the audience with some respect !
