NDTV are showing a documentary , where a Bulgarian lady travels over Europe to find the origins of this song. She travels to Turkey, Greece, Saraejvo and everyone claims it to be their song, with conviction! The tune remains the same the lyrics have changed . In turkey it was a love song and a military tune in Sarejvo its a religious prayer , but the tune is the same , a really nice one, ane everywhere people were happy singing it.
I dont know what the documentary concludes in the end, to me its the universal desire of people to be generally happy, in our own ways, under the same blue sky . Its always within us the desire to pursuit happiness but while doing it we loose sight of it and divert to create barriers..too possessive of our way of life, our ideals , not pausing to appreciate other side of the story. I would have recounted this time and again and everytime I see something that reaffirms this thought , I get all worked up for its such a beautiful thing and how sad we are ruining it, always.. almost always !
Its really difficult to search for these kind of songs, I remember the tune of a old scottish song that I listened while in Kolkatta , its still in my mind but but how do I ask Google to search for it :( And then there were some Himachal folk songs that I had recorded on the bus while in Ladakh , The tune is intact in the recording and is good enough to lift your spirits.
